Ukraine Takes Action: Securing Power Grid Amidst Escalating Russia Tensions

writer: Hao-Ting Chen
The Russia Ukraine War is entering its 265th day, with Ukraine preparing for a potential grid collapse from Russian attacks. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy reveals previous Russian attacks have damaged over 40% of the power infrastructure, forcing Ukrainians to live in the dark and in the cold without warm water or light. Ukraine has requested aid from the US in repairing damaged parts of the grid and setting up backup power sources, placing it at highest priority before its request for more weapons.

Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, Vadym Skibitsky says “The Russians may use a combination of missile weapons and attack UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones). These will definitely not be such primitive attacks as last year. It will be difficult for the Russians to achieve a result - we are also preparing and understanding how they act.” Ukrainians continue to prepare for a colder winter, buying large amounts of rechargeable batteries. Thousands of workers are working on repairing the power grid, with up to nine workers killed during the process by Russian attacks.
